If you directly translate the name Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto (MLL) you might assume that this organization is a union that works to protect children by taking them away from families who are deemed unsafe or unfit to care for them. On the contrary, this association was founded to ensure the wellness of children all over Finland, by offering channels of support to their caretakers.
– Our work here in MLL is different than the official child protective services of Finland. Our services focus on maintaining the wellbeing of children, family members and childcare providers, exclaims Anne-Maija Heilä, Social Director at MLL.
Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto was founded in 1920 to handle aid and relief efforts for single parent families after the 1918 civil war, which left thousands without resources for living. General Mannerheim published “an appeal to the Finnish people,” in the newspapers at that time encouraging countrywide, community assistance for this cause. With great results, he was able to open the first location in Hanko and for over 100 years MLL has been assisting families with children.
General Mannerheim’s idea that the entire nation should band together to care for those families affected by the war, created a model of child protection and wellness that promotes community efforts in creating a safety-net for families with children. This network helps families with every-day issues like raising children, spousal relations, and household maintenance.
– It’s not only about raising children, we want you to know that you are not alone in your journey, explains Anne-Maija whose weekly routine includes hosting and organizing meeting days for families in Laitila.
– We have weekly gatherings for families to meet one another. Our staff, partners and volunteers work together to offer support, and help to find joy in everyday life with children.
Meetings at MLL Laitila include Kasvu Vanhemmuuteen for first time parents, Vauvakahvila for families with children ages 1.5 and younger, and Perhekahvila, for all families with children. Grandparents, caretakers, and other family members are also welcomed to participate. At the moment because of covid the meetings are by reservation only.
The association provides free services for all participants and does not require membership to get involved. Services are available for all families with children in Laitila including those who do not yet speak Finnish.
– We are applying to receive funding for a cooperative project from Leader Ravakka so that we can strengthen our multicultural work in Laitila. We hope to have times of sharing during evenings, where we get to know the food cultures of different countries, as well as hold groups where housewives can learn to speak Finnish.
Anne-Maija hopes that with more information about the functions of MLL, more families will come and take advantage of the opportunities.
– This is an important place for children to find friends to play with, and for families to find a community of support.

Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliiton eli MLL:n nimeä tarkastellessa saattaa mieleen juolahtaa, että yhdistys edesauttaa lastensuojelua ja huostaanottoja. Oikeastaan asia on päinvastoin, MLL perustettiin turvaamaan kaikkien Suomessa asuvien lasten hyvinvointia muun muassa tukemalla vanhemmuutta.
MLL perustettiin sisällissodan jälkeen vuonna 1920. Tarkoituksena oli auttaa perheitä, joiden elinolot olivat heikentyneet esimerkiksi toisen vanhemman kuoltua. Syntyi toimintamalli, jossa perheiden hyvinvointia parannettiin luomalla yhteisöllinen turvaverkko, josta saa apua lasten kasvatukseen, tukea parisuhteeseen ja kotitöihin.
– Kyse ei ole pelkästään lasten kasvatuksesta. Haluamme kaikkien tietävän, että kukaan ei ole yksin omalla matkallaan, selittää MLL:n perhetoiminnan ohjaaja Anne-Maija Heilä.
Hän järjestää perhekahvilatoimintaa Laitilassa.
MLL:n henkilökunta, yhteistyökumppanit ja vapaaehtoiset tarjoavat perheille tukea ja apua, jotta jokainen voi nauttia lapsiperhearjesta.
Laitilassa on tarjolla tapaamisia ensimmäisen lapsen saaneille vanhemmille, vauvakahvila pienten lasten vanhemmille ja perhekahvila kaikille lapsiperheille. Ovet ovat avoinna myös isovanhemmille ja muille läheisille. Koronan takia toiminta pyörii tällä hetkellä ajanvarauksella.
Yhdistyksen toiminta on maksutonta eikä yhdistykseen tarvitse liittyä. Palvelut ovat tarjolla kaikille, myös ei-suomenkielisille.
– Haemme Leader Ravakasta rahoitusta yhteistyöhankkeelle, jonka kautta voimme vahvistaa monikansallista työtämme Laitilassa. Haluamme järjestää tapaamiskertoja, joissa voimme tutustua eri maiden ruokakulttuureihin ja tarjota kotiäideille apua suomen kielen opetteluun.
Anne-Maija Heilä toivoo, että tieto MLL:n palveluista tavoittaa yhä useamman perheen.
– Tämä on tärkeä paikka myös lapsille, jotka löytävät täältä leikkikavereita. Koko perhe voi saada yhteisöllistä tukea.
